University tutoring and the importance of training: a proposal from the University of Padova
Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper explores the topic of tutor training in higher education. The first section discusses the scientific debate on this issue, before presenting the experience of the University of Padova regarding the training of peer tutors.
The details of a new training model, proposed from 2022-23, are accompanied by research evidence, which included the perceptions of participating tutors, that informed the redesign and improvement of the training activities.
The redesigned tutor training significantly improved tutors’ satisfaction, skill development and preparation. A comparison of pre-post training surveys revealed an alignment between training needs and outcomes. Tutors’ satisfaction levels rose from 54% to 83.2% over two years.
What is proposed can serve as an example of desirable practice for tutor training in universities, whilst interpretation of the literature and the findings of research can serve as a starting point for wider national and international debate on these issues.
