Abstract

This paper explores the experience of the Formative Tutoring at the University of Padua, an opportunity available to first-year students aimed at accompanying their transition and permanence in the university context, favouring student retention and academic success through the strengthening of certain soft skills. Making use of a literature review and qualitative research based on interviews and focus groups with various tutors, the strengths, criticalities and prospects for improvement and redesign of the programme are explored. The results highlight the crucial role of tutoring in supporting first-year students and professionalising tutors, and suggest strategies for its redesign and enhancement.
